Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Kennedy Nyarko Osei

Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has urged Ghanaians to disregard comments of actor cum politician John Dumelo on the prices of local rice.

Comparing rice brands such as Lele and Emerald to a local rice producing firm Wienco, he said Wienco produced the same quality rice as Lele and Emerald and is even cheaper compared to prices of Lele and Emerald.

“People like John Dumelo should be disregarded for saying that local rice is expensive, because 25 kilos Lele rice is between GH¢ 220 and GH¢ 250, Emerald is GH¢ 218 but 25 kilos of ‘Aduanehene’ rice from Wienco goes for GH¢ 135,” he stated in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Thursday.

Mr Dumelo on his Facebook post argued that imported rice is relatively cheaper.

The actor was of the view that many Ghanaians would opt for local rice if it’s cheaper.

To the Minister, claims that prices of locally produced rice are expensive are an attempt by some people to pollute and misinform the public about the real prices of rice produced locally.
