A/R: Angry youth hold policeman hostage; demand release of arrested colleague as ransom

A police officer with the Bekwai Municipal Command was held hostage during operations by angry youth of Behenase in the area following the arrest of their colleague, MyNewsGh.com reports.

 

Armed police were in the community to calm down a nearly bloody chieftaincy clash between two gates according to police sources that revealed to our Ashanti Regional Correspondent.

According to reports, the residents abducted the officer after police had made arrest of one of the youth said be leading some gangs to burn a local palace.

“As peace officers, our core responsibility is to maintain peace and order so we went to the community after Intelligence that the youth are causing confusion. One guy was arrested and was brought to

station. …without knowing, these stubborn youth had also abducted one of us on condition that if the suspect is not freed, they will also keep our colleague hostage”, an officer told MyNewsGh.com.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has declined comment except to say police is investigating the matter to ensure perpetrators of such heinous crimes are brought to justice.

Meanwhile, the abducted policeman has since been released after the suspect was granted bail and expected to be reporting periodically.
