The Minister for the Interior, Mr Ambrose Dery, on Monday, 30 September, 2019, paid a working visit to the offices of the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, the Narcotics Control Board, Ghana National Fire Service, Gaming Commission, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Regional Peace Council in the Northern Region to interact with the officers.

The meeting was in consonance with the Akufo-Addo government’s commitment to engage stakeholders in the sector to outline innovative and strategic measures and steps to improve law and order in the country.

Mr Ambrose Dery, in his remarks, commended the Northern Regional Minister, Mr Salifu Saeed and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) for maintaining relative peace in the region.

He said: “We do know the leadership of His Excellency the President and the eminent chiefs; [the problem] that we thought was an impossible problem to crack has now been settled and it’s no coincidence that the President was given the accolade Abudani I, meaning he is for all and I want to thank you for still supervising the peace and ensuring that the Dagbon crisis is basically resolved.”

The minister stated that the commitment of the government to ensuring Ghana is peaceful is not lips service and assured the security chiefs of more interventions to empower all the security personnel.

This, he added, is to ensure the men in uniform are able to fight crime, security threats, violence, terrorism and chieftaincy disputes.

Mr Dery acknowledged the performance of the police service in recent years, stating that there were many crimes in the past committed that remain unresolved.

He noted that the government, since 2017, has supported the security services to improve their output and, therefore, “You will find that many of the crimes committed are resolved. It is unfortunate in some of the cases, even though we get the culprits, some fatalities have taken place and we are guided by that.”

He urged the public to support and collaborate with the state security agencies to maintain law and order in the country.

“We should make sure that we come to the grassroots and assess the strategies that we have put in place to make sure that they are being implemented.

“Let us find out in what ways we can better-implement the strategies and also take innovative steps guided by experience with the security agencies on the ground to make sure that the President’s commitment and goal to make every Ghanaian feel safe is on course.”
