‘My wife has left me’ – Man fakes suicide attempt

By:brightwebtv.com/nana asare barimah

A man has caused a stir in Accra after faking a suicide attempt by threatening to jump off the Obetsebi Lamptey statue.

The man known as Dr. Think Twice was seen on top of the statue Tuesday morning complaining, life is not worth living because his wife has left him.

His cry gathered pedestrians around the statue and police officers were dispatched to the scene believing the threat is real.

It turned out, he is into anti-suicide advocacy and faked the attempt to draw attention to what he has observed as an ignored crisis.

There are no reliable national statistics on suicidal behaviour in Ghana but the Mental Health Authority has confirmed, the “disturbing” tendency is growing especially among the youth.

“Attempted suicide is not a criminal issue. Neither is it a moral issue or spiritual problem. It is simply a cry for help to resolve psychosocial issues and therefore more appropriately is a medical problem,” Head of the Authority, Dr. Akwasi Osei has said.

Suicide remains a criminal offence but prosecutions of suicidal persons are rare.
