We burnt poison, not money-NACOB on $3m ‘Wee’ destruction

The Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) has justified its decision to burn seized packs of marijuana and cannabis worth $3m describing them as poison and not money.

Eight tons of the illegal products were seized over a period of one year at the Airport, post offices, border checkpoints and vehicles that had them concealed and being transported.

According to the Deputy Director of NACOB, Michael Addo, the combination of marijuana, cannabis and other illicit products that were set ablaze at the Bundaase military base on Wednesday were estimated in monetary value at 3 million dollars.

“We are burning 3 million dollars’ worth of drugs” he disclosed.

In a response to assertions that the exercise amounted to burning of colossal sums of money, Mr Addo retorted “We are burning poison that is a lot of poison to be able to destroy so many people”.

While Reiterating the position of NACOB to destroy such seized items no matter the monetary value, the Deputy Director argued that many people have been destroyed through addiction to such drugs and while efforts are being made to rehabilitate such persons, it has become imperative for many others to be protected by seizing and destroying such products.

“If we find it in your car, the car would be confiscated and if we find it in your house [your] house would be confiscated” he added.

Pressure is mounting on the Government of Ghana to legalise and regulate the production and exportation of marijuana with some prominent individuals and groups backing the call as they suggest the legalization would fetch some money for the country.

The Ghana Police Service last week secured an injunction to restrain the Rastafari Council of Ghana from going ahead with a planned demonstration.

The demonstration was to protest and mount pressure on the government to decriminalize marijuana in the country.
