Employees of Perseus Mining Company at Ayamfuri in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central region are living in danger as the townsfolk have launched an offensive on them following the killing of two illegal miners in the town by operatives of the Operation Vanguard last week, MyNewsGh.com reports.

The ‘galamseyers’ were said to be ravaging some tailings dumped on part of the concession belonging to Perseus Mining, when the soldiers opened fire, killing two on the spot following a  confrontation.

One of the workers who spoke in an interview with Kumasi-based Angel FM on condition of strict anonymity said they are unable to walk freely in the town since the incidence and townsfolk periodically storm their homes to attack them.

The situation has compelled the mining company to recall all its employees from the community to take cover at the mines where they could be assured of adequate security.

The source also said some of the senior staff whose homes have been burgled are currently been housed in a hotel at a nearby town.

The reprisal attacks, according to the source, have also been fueled by a longstanding perception that, the mine workers have been snatching their girlfriends.

The Mmerantiehene (Youth chief) of the Ayamfuri Traditional Area, Nana Kwabena Okyere, who spoke with Angel News in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com, said the matter has come to the attention of the chiefs and that they are in talks with the angry youth to calm down.

He said the traditional authority is working with the security services to maintain the relative peace in the area.

Consequently, the one week funeral observation of the killed artisanal miners which was slated for last weekend hat to be called off by the traditional authority until such a time that absolute peace would be guaranteed.

The families of the deceased are also calling for justice, as they argue the soldiers faulted in pursuing them all the way to their homes to kill them, no matter what crimes they must have committed on the mining site.
