The Minister of Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has denied reports suggesting that he said the Government of Ghana will reduce the four years for University Education to three years, MyNewsGh.com gathered from his latest reaction.

According to reports in the media, the Minister while speaking at the 2019 Danquah Institute Leadership lecture under the theme: “World Class Education and Imperative for the Next Generation of Leaders,” mentioned that“Everywhere in the world, undergrad is three years not four years, why should we spend four years doing undergrad? We will sit down with the university lecturers and start challenging them, because Ghana is not an island”.
He explained added that “Because we have learnt [from] our history, they took two years in doing a degree in the University of Ghana. KNUST took three years because in the University of Ghana, they had a first university exam that was non-scoring and still came out with PhDs”.
But a statement from the Communication Directorate of the Ministry indicates that the Minister was misconstrued.
According to the statement, the Minister wanted to ignite a National Conversation on the need to reduce University Education to three years rather than four years which is currently ran by the various Universities.
On issuing Higher National Diploma to students who complete Senior High Schools in Ghana, the statement mentioned that the Minister mooted the issuing of a Higher National Diploma for a public Dialogue on whether every SHS student should write a University entrance exams.
