Call for VC’s resignation unfortunate – UEW SRC

The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) said the call by the alumni for the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and the dissolution of the Governing Council of the University was unfortunate.
It said the Vice-Chancellor, Reverend Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, and the Governing Council, within their short stay in office, had performed creditably.

This was in a statement presented at a press conference on Thursday, signed by Mr Evans Austin Brew, Unified SRC President, Mr Akulugu Issaka, Acting President of Winneba Campus and Etsey Katamani, SRC President, Ajumako Campus, to explain the recent happenings at Winneba and Ajumako campuses of the University, leading to its closure.
The SRC implored all affected persons aggrieved by the decisions of the Governing Council to pursue their case through the laid down processes of the University and eventually to the courts if no internal resolution were reached.
It said even though it appreciated that students, at one point or the other, may have grievances, they must express them in accordance with the established processes.
“The SRC wishes to serve notice that, henceforth, all students should channel their grievances and concerns through the communication channel of the University and the processes to be followed in organising demonstrations, rallies and processions, either on campus or off-campus, as enshrined in the Undergraduate Students’ Handbook, pages 50-51 and 59-61 respectively, as well as the Public Order Act 1994 (Act 491)”.
It further indicated that the SRC had taken note of activities of some faceless individuals posing as UEW Alumni trying frantically to discredit the current leadership of the SRC.
According to the SRC, it was deeply saddened by the level of destruction caused to public and private property during the students’ protests on Thursday, March 14, adding that the Council did not sponsor, initiate, take part or sanction the lawlessness at Winneba.
The SRC, it noted, was working tirelessly with management to recall students to campus in the earliest possible time.
It applauded the Central Regional Security Council for the timely intervention to prevent the escalation and destruction on the two campuses.
