PETITION TO THE NATIONAL PEACE COUNCIL TO RESOLVE THE NUGS STANDOFF.

Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante
Chairman of National Peace Council.

Dear Sir,

IN THE NAME OF GOD ALMIGHTY.
We the undersigned Ghanaian student’s leaders do hereby petition the the National Peace Council to resolve and unite the National Union of Ghana Students. We are petitioning because our internal mechanisms and other institutions have failed to bring an end to this problem.
Mr. Chairman, the National Union of Ghana Students is the umbrella body for all Ghanaian students both home and abroad. This union is the official student’s Union which was instituted to promote the general welfare of Ghanaian students. The membership of NUGS comprise of all students from kindargarten to the PhD level resident in Ghana or abroad.
This Union elects her leaders by a delegates Congress. The composition and how Congress must be organized are detailed in the Union’s Constitution.
But Mr. Chairman in 2016, there was a division in the leadership of the Union. A Congress was slated to be organized at St. Francis College of Education, Hohoe in the Volta Region of Ghana.
However, two days into this Congress, to the surprise of student across the country, Mr. Luqman Abubakar and others were declared leaders of the Union at Ideal College in Accra whiles the original Congress was still ongoing at Hohoe.
The Hohoe Congress ended and voting was done, Mr. Julian Mawuse Cobinnah and others were also declared winners by the electoral commission of the Union.
This brought about two set of leaders for our Union. The division has continued to today as Mr. Tinkaro Asare and Mr. Gombilla hold themselves as the Presidents of their respective faction.
This problem has made the students front inactive. Ghanaian students are challenged with high school fees, exorbitant residential fees and a tertiary education bill etc that must be discussed with government and other key policy makers. The division has left all these problems unresolved.
We therefore call on you to;
1. Bring the two leadership together
2. Supervise the organization of Congress and the elections of leaders
3. Supervise the implementation of the NUGS reforms
4. Supervise the review of the Union’s constitution to bring perpetual end to this problem.
