All form 2 students in public Senior High Schools and their teachers across the country are being recalled from their end of term vacation for extra classes.

A June 5 decision from the Ghana Education Service (GES) asked all the students to return to their respective schools on August 19 for their teachers to “give them additional support under the academic intervention scheme”.

Regional Directors of Education have consequently been tasked to design the appropriate timetable and also get the teachers involved in applying for funding related to ‘extra classes’ the programme.

“The period from now till 19th August should provide some rest for both students and teachers involved,” a statement issued by the Director General of GES, Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa stated.

It asked the all heads and teachers of various schools to cooperate to make the exercise successful.

According to the GES, it received letters from the various schools across the regions requesting for permission to organize extra classes for form 2 students during the current vocation, particularly for students identified to have issues with their various courses of study.

Management of the GES, the statement said, “endorses the idea in principle,” but indicated that the need for extra support for such students was the reason the government introduced the ‘academic intervention’ under the free SHS programme.
