NDC Flagbearer race: Asawase delegates vote under heavily armed security personnel

At least 30 heavily armed police personnel have been deployed to Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti Region to maintain law and order at the Aboabo M/A school which has been designated as a voting center, MyNewsGh.com reports.

Delegates and executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are voting to elect a flagbearer to lead the party in the 2020 general elections with seven delegates on the ballot contesting for the slot.
In all, 1420 delegates are expected to cast their vote at the polling station in the ongoing exercise which is the first of its kind for the NDC since the inception of the fourth republic.
The Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Fred Adu Anim was spotted at the voting center considering the fact the constituency is one of the flash points in the region and is remotely connected to the recent shooting incident that claimed one life and left another with severe injury

Speaking to the Airport District Police Commander in charge of the security at Asawase voting center Superintendent Abdullah Iddrisu he told MyNewsGh.com that measures have been put in place to ensure violence free elections at Asawase constituency.
According to him, his men are there not to intimidate the voters but rather protect the voters and ballot boxes in line with their duties.
“The number of the delegates at Asawase constituency forced us to deploy more police personnel. We are to protect not to intimidate the voters. We will make sure nobody will take the law into his/her own hands. We won’t allow one person or a group of people to cause trouble at the center” he said.
Meanwhile motorbikes have been banned at voting centers by the Ashanti Regional Police Command with threats to arrest and prosecute persons who violate this directive as part of measures to avert a recurrence of last Monday’s shooting incident.
