The armoury of the Michel Camp Barracks near Tema in the Greater Accra Region, exploded Wednesday dawn causing pandemonium among civilian residents who live around the base of the First Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Loud fiery explosions were heard when a blaze gutted the armoury.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Troops of soldiers were deployed from the barracks to ensure the fire did not spread dangerously to the compartments of the armoury that hold heavy weapons.
No deaths and injuries have been reported.
The fire was battled until 3 a.m. when it was deemed doused.
Fearing for their lives, residents in the area fled to neighbouring Afienya, Community 25 and Gbetsile.
