Troops participating in United Nations’ international peace support operations, have been advised to be circumspect in their financial dealings and be wary of Ponzi schemes.

The Sector North Commander of the United Nations Mission In South Sudan (UNMISS), Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Johnson Kofi Akou-Adjei made the call when he visited the Ghana Armed Forces Battalion (GHANBATT) headquarters base in Bentiu, Unity State, South Sudan, as part of a familiarization tour of his sector of responsibility, from 25th to 30th of April, 2019.

Brig Gen Akou-Adjei – also the Senior National Representative of Ghana in the theatre – held an all-ranks durbar with the troops, where he urged them to remain professional in their operations as they serve as ambassadors of the nation.

The General stated that the mission is multinational and thus any misconduct under the Ghanaian national colours, would bring disrepute to the nation, therefore, all troops must uphold high standards of professionalism in their activities and be focused and alert during their tour of duty.

The Sector Commander further emphasized on the need for the battalion to cultivate and nurture their information gathering skills, so as to enable them identify indicators of escalation of conflict or breach of the “Revitalized Peace Agreement on Resolution of Conflict”, early enough to report, in order to curb or mitigate them.

Addressing peculiar challenges of the battalion, the General stated that the Mission Force Headquarters was aware of the situation and making all efforts possible to tackle them, but cautioned that solutions might delay than expected due to budgetary constraints, while he commended the battalion for laying out projections to address some of the challenges.

He encouraged troops to take their In-mission training seriously to add up to their pre-operational training as these trainings would make them confident saying, “Confidence is the ability to discharge duties assigned”.

The Sector North Commander, prior to the durbar, had visited the Temporary Operation Base of the battalion in Leer County, where he interacted with the troops and also advised them to stay focused and work towards achieving the mandate of the mission.
