Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has backed the decision by President Nana Akuffo-Addo in referring the case to Office of the Special Prosecutor to investigate into the Ghanaian officials said to have been engaged in the Airbus bribery scandal.

He said the matter has become an international issue which has dented the good image of Ghana, and must therefore been investigated and necessary legal action taken against any such official, as required by law in the country.

On January 31, 2020, Ghana was named as one of five countries in which the plane maker, Airbus, paid or attempted to pay millions of dollars in bribes in exchange for contracts, leading a court in Britain to slap a fine of £3 billion on the company.

In Crown Court at Southwark in the United Kingdom’s documents and hearings in the United Kingdom, Airbus admitted five counts of failing to prevent bribery, using a network of secret agents to pay large-scale backhanders to officials in foreign countries, including Ghana, to land high-value contracts.

The document also alleged that contrary to section 7 of the UK’s Bribery Act 2010, Airbus failed to prevent persons associated with it from “bribing others concerned with the purchase of military transport aircraft by the Government of Ghana, where the said bribery was intended to obtain or retain business or advantage in the conduct of business, from 2009 and 2015.”

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Otec FM’s morning show ‘Nyansapo’, hosted by Captain Koda, on Thursday, February 6, 2020, former president said government officials who were involved in the transactions, between 2009 and 2015, must be thoroughly investigated to unravel the bribery scandal.

“The bribery scandal against Ghana by the UK Crown Court which involves airplane manufacturing giants, Airbus, is a national issue that concerns everybody. We must support the president’s decision so that the government officials involved to the know truth,” he said.

He added “referring the bribery scandal to the office of EOCO and the Special Prosecution by the president is the right decision and must wait to find out what comes from it.”

“We are waiting patiently for the outcome of the inquiry”, he concluded.
