On the basis on death or installation as chief, by default an MP vacates one’s seat.
Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, late Mr. Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko passed after a prolonged illness. This warranted a by-election which was held on the January 31, 2019.
The contest became so intense between the Candidate of the NDC, Mr. Delali Kwasi Brempong and the Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) though the LGP and the PPP had candidates contesting in the race.
There seem another by-election underway.
Background to the Ayawaso By-Election
The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan Member of Parliament elect for Ayawaso West Wuogon.
Four candidates contested the election. They include the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberation Party of Ghana (LPG) and the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).
Lydia Seyram Alhassan won primaries after a tight contest with her contenders.
All this while, she was also preparing herself for the funeral service and burial for her late husband, Mr. Emmanual Kyeremateng Agyarko.
She had managed to run her first rally organized by the youth branch of the NPP which the Vice President, Dr. Alhaji Bawumia joined.
On January 26, 2019, the burial service was held and eventually sealed the cover of the late MP. Today being an election day, Madam Seyram took to the social media and urged voters within the constituency to go all out and cast their votes.
Her main contender, candidate for the NDC, Mr. Delali Kwasi Brempong had gone on a similar massive rally before the election which the party’s executive featured including the Chairman, Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, General Secretary, Mr. Asiedu Nketia, the National Youth Organiser, Mr. Joshua Akamba and others.
Cumulatively, figures collated are in favour of the NPP so far.
She won the poll by 12, 041 votes representing 68.30% with the closest contender, Delali Kwasi Brempong, the National Democratic Congress’ candidate polling 5, 341 votes representing 30.52%
William Dowokpor of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Clement Boadi of the Liberal Party of Ghana both managed a paltry 102 and 17 votes respectively.
Accusations
The New Patriotic Party this afternoon held a press conference soon after the National Democratic Congress brought theirs to an end.
The NDC led by its Chairman, Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo had convened a press conference which he expressed disgust over violence which had marred the by-election in the constituency.
He said that, the NDC party had pulled out of the elections and in consultation with party executives has told all polling agents to vacate their duties.
Soon after, the NPP led by its National Communications Director, Mr. Yaw Buabeng Asamoah raised issues with the withdrawal of the NDC.
However, he condemned the violent incidents which had marred the election processes.
He said that, the NDC was desperate to paint to the international community a bad imagery with Ghana.
