Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate hopeful and former president John Dramani Mahama has justified his infamous ‘boot for boot’ comment, explaining that it was meant to calm the tempers of NDC followers.

According to the former president, tension was so high after the violence in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency which culminated in several people sustaining varied degrees of injuries that he had to do something immediately to douse the tension and calm down the party’s supporters.
Speaking on Accra based radio Gold on Friday February 22, 2019, Mr. Mahama said “when I saw what happened at the Ayawaso West Wuogon, we needed to calm tempers and so one had to appeal to our base and getting them to remain calm and that is why I said what I said. Probably if I hadn’t said that, some of our people would have taken things into their own hands” he said.
Mr. Mahama said even though the initiative adopted by president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to resolve the menace of political vigilantism in the country is good, it was too simplistic.

According to him, the two parties alone cannot deal with the matter, adding there needs to be proper structuring going forward.
