NDC supporters besiege party offices, burn tyres in protest of MP’s re-election bid

Supporters of Masawudu Mubarick have vowed to vote ‘skirt and blouse’ in 2020 elections if the party hierarchy does not rescind its decision to allow him to contest.

Some sympathisers of the qualified aspirant in the Asawase constituency primaries of NDC have besieged the party’s office in the Ashanti region, to protest the decision.

The supporters say they are unhappy about the disqualification of their preferred Parliamentary aspirant, Masawudu Mubarick by the party’s hierarchy in the constituency.

The incumbent Asawase MP, Muntaka Mubarak was on Tuesday, September 3, declared to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections on the ticket of the opposition party unopposed.

This follows the acceptance of a report by the Doe Adjaho Committee which was constituted to look into petitions surrounding the selection of parliamentary candidates.

The NDC held parliamentary primaries nationwide but the elections were put on hold in five constituencies including Asawase.

Elections were later held in four of the constituencies leaving Asawase where some NDC members had filed a petition to the National Executive Council of the party.

This follows the petitioners’ inability to file the nomination of Masawudu Mubarick, the aspirant who was challenging the incumbent.

In a statement copied to Joy News, the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia said the issues have been settled and Mr. Mubarak will now go unopposed.

Dissatisfied with the outcome of the findings by the Adjaho Committee on their petition, supporters of Masawudu marched to the Regional Office in Kumasi to protest the decision.

They have set tyres on fire at the office premises to register their displeasure.

Earlier Wednesday, the sympathisers gathered at Masawudu’s residence where they vowed to vote ‘skirt and blouse’ in 2020 elections if the party hierarchy does not rescind its decision to allow him to contest.
