You don’t run an economy from textbooks’ – Mahama tells Bawumia

Former President John Dramani Mahama has suggested he has been vindicated for stating in 2016 that Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia did not have the competence to run the country’s economy.

On the back of criticism from the then presidential and vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party against his running of the economy, Mahama asked; “do you know what it takes to be a president?”

Mr Mahama who is now in opposition claims the management of the economy for the past three years by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia led-government, has clearly demonstrated the two have no practical expertise whatsoever.

He said: “I’m sure today they see the reality and I would’ve hope that today, Bawumia would give another lecture at the Central University and say the same theoretical things he used to say.

“You don’t run an economy from textbooks; you don’t run an economy with economic lectures,” Mahama said Thursday evening in a Live Social media interaction.

For the former president who is seeking to recapture power from Nana Akufo-Addo, “Running an economy takes practical work, determination and prioritization”.

He argued economic management was not as theoretical as Dr Bawumia made it seem ahead of the December 2016 general elections.

Akufo-Addo & Bawumia were naive

Mr Mahama contended that both Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia “were very naïve” and were only interested in asking the former vice president, the late Dr Kwesi Amissah Arthur “170 theoretical questions”.

He stated that after all the economic lectures by Dr Bawumia, the Akufo-Addo government is having difficulty to diagnose the cause of the depreciation of the Ghana cedi, which Mahama said even a first year economic student can do

“…today they come and set up a 40-man committee to understand why forex is [falling]. I mean a first year university student will tell you and so you don’t need that FX Committee”, he said.
