24 wives of dead Dagbon Ya-Naa tested to see if they were faithful to him, all -passed-

An age-old tradition of the people of Dagbon has seen 24 living wives of the infamously slain ruler of the people, pass fidelity rituals that are done to see if wives were faithful during their marriage until the funeral of their husband.

Yaa-Naa Yakubu Andani II, the deceased ruler whose living wives were taken through the process, had his funeral rites between January 4 to 18, 2019, after 17 long years of conflict between the two noble houses in the area.

Yaa-Naa Andani was murdered in his Gbewa Palace in 2002 with dozens of his elders. The actual killers have still not been found. But it would seem almost two decades after the ruler has bitten the dust, his people are looking to see if his wives were faithful to him. A report carried by Joy News showed that families of the 24 wives came there to give morale support to their relatives.

The women are kept in a room together for sometime and one by one, they are tested to see if they were faithful. The tradition is so intense that the women would not have to be with other men until their husband was in the ground. The women according to the report, were carried shoulder high after their success. If they had failed, they would have been shamed, disallowed to remarry and the shame would be extended to their daughters.

It was reported that the people of the Dagbon traditional area have a new Ya-Naa in the person of Yo Na Abubakar Mahama. He was confirmed Ya-Naa elect by the kingmakers of Dagbon led by the Kuga Naa Adam Abdulai. Yo Naa Abubakari Mahama was selected after the successful final funeral rites of the late Ya-Naa Yakubu Andani II.
