George Quaye, Former Head of Public Events and communications of Charterhouse

Former Head of Public Events and Communications of Charterhouse Productions Limited, George Quaye has debunked claims that members of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) board receive bribes to award artistes in the music industry.

Speaking on Accra based Hitz FM, George Quaye stressed that the Vodafone Awards Scheme is made up of three blocks and cannot tell how the bribe will be taken.

He quipped, “How are you going to bribe? There are three blocks. You can’t bribe one block. You will need at least two blocks; so who are you going to bribe then, the public and the academy, or the academy and the board or the board and public? It is a large body. How are you able to bribe every single person?”

According to him, VGMA cannot satisfy everybody; adding that it is a competitive scheme and is guided by terms and conditions.

“When you are running a scheme of that nature, you should know you are not doing something right when you are able to satisfy everybody. If you are able to satisfy everybody and everybody is happy and giving thumbs up, there is something wrong because it is competitive and anything that is competitive, goes truly by terms and conditions set, follows rules, all values and everything comes to play. When you are done, not everyone will be happy about it,” he explained.

George Quaye also revealed how members of the board get heat up at times in forwarding their arguments on the boardroom.

“It’s a fight in that boardroom. People get angry and leave. It is not like a group of people who decide. People come with strong arguments and they speak to it. Let’s show some respect to some of the big people we know there; people like Mark Okraku Mantey is knowledgeable, he knows his stuff,” he said.

“In the 20 years history of VGMA,  there hasn’t been one single year that the awards come and everybody was happy and satisfied” he added.

This year’s awards marks the 20th anniversary edition of the VGMAs.
