Aspiring MUSIGA Presidential candidate  Ras Caleb Appiah-Levi, has lamented that, the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), which is the country’s body for all of its musicians and music professionals “is on the verge of collapse”.

The UNION, which was registered in 1974 and incorporated in 1975 claims it has over 4000 members.

MUSIGA is affiliated with several ministries in Ghana, including the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Trade and Industries, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Creative Arts Council of Ghana, and the National Commission on Culture among others.

With a mission to promote and preserve ‘Ghanaian culture through education and equipping the Ghanaian musician to be self reliant, creative and industrious,’ MUSIGA is governed by a National Executive Committee elected at a National Congress .

Now the union that claims it offers its members help with music contracts, copyright registration services, pension and insurance, welfare fund for its aging members and a loan service is on the verge of collapse.

In collapsing, the Union is falling over; it is caving in; and about to totally crumple.

“After finding out that the Union is collapsing and our investments along with it, due to very WEAK structures and incompetent leadership; with no clue in administration, communications and governance, and not adhering to the tenets MUSIGA Constitution, hence it is on the brink of collapse”, Ras Caleb summarized.

Ras Caleb who became a member of MUSIGA in June 1982, revealed that “The Structures at MUSIGA are very weak. The Union’s regional branches can`t take care of their executives and membership because they are not strengthened by the National Executive Committee headed by a President, so we don’t have a union because it is tattered and bruised. It’s my fervent wish and desire that when i assume office to serve as the President of MUSIGA, i will strengthen them to be able to function independently to seek the welfare of all musicians” he added.

“I have been the Greater-Accra Regional Chairman since August 2016, and I must admit that a lot has gone rotten”.

“When i registered to become a member of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) in June 1982, the Union was eight (8) years old as it was formed in 1974 and incorporated in 1975, having the late Mr. Jerry Hansen as its first President (1974-1979).

The Music Professor Kwame Boa-Amponsem, known popularly as ‘Agya Koo Nimo’, took over from 1979 to 1989; to be followed by the late Odomakoma Kyerema Kofi Ghanaba from 1989 to 1992.

The late Mr. Joe Mensah served the Union from 1992-1999, to be followed by Alhaji Sidiku Buari who reigned from 1999 to 2007.

Mrs. Diana Hopeson, the 6th MUSIGA President reigned from 2007 to 2011 to be followed by Mr. Bice Osei Kuffour (a.k.a. Obour) the 7th MUSIGA President took office from 2011 and haphazardly ended his term in August, 2019.
