Audio: Mahama’s engagement with diplomats ill-advised – Adam Bona

A Security expert has faulted former President John Mahama for showing photos and videos of the violence that nearly marred the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections to the diplomatic community.

Adam Bona believes the ex-president exposed Ghana’s security lapses to the international community.

The former President on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, showed diplomats a video of the violence at La Bawaleshie, a suburb of Accra on January 31, 2019.

Joined by the bigwigs of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama allegedly showed the members of the diplomatic community, videos and photos of the violence – the gunshots, the injured persons and the physical assaults.

In that incident, masked and heavily armed men fired shots and beat up persons suspected to be hiding guns and ammunition in the parliamentary candidate of the NDC’s house.

No ammunitions were retrieved but at least six persons sustained gunshot wounds.

However, widespread public condemnation of the incident prompted the setting up of a special commission to look into the matter.

But the motive for the event, according to Mr Mahama is to prove that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has a fertile history of engaging vigilante groups to cause mayhem.

Reacting to the issue on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem programme Friday, Adam Bonah said the former President was “ill-advised”.

He said that single action could affect Ghana’s Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) because most investors will be scared due to the gloomy picture he has painted.

“These diplomats are directly connected to investors and funding that will come into Ghana so I’m not happy Mahama showed them that video,” the Security Expert said.

Adam Bona said since Mr Mahama was one-time Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Force and chairman of the National Security Council he should have known better.
