You’ll have to kill us to get access to our lands – Tontokrom residents to Asanko mines

The residents of Tontokrom – Manso in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region have cautioned the leadership workers of Asanko mine to stay clear off their lands,stating that “you will have to kill us all before getting our lands for your mining activities”.

According to them,they have only depended on small scale mining to survive since time immemorial as natives of the community and has only been the means of employment for the residents.

Kwabena Animuoyam, the unit Committee Chairman of the community,noted that the leadership of the Asanko mine have been tormenting the lives of residents of the community with the presence of armed military officers, adding that they normally ran into bushes to seek refuge whenever the soldiers come to the community.

He further called on government to approve their proposal of community mining to make it official in the community.

We are giving the NPP government from today March 1,2024, to June 2024, to give us community mining, refusal to grant us our wish will lead to a boycott of the general elections in December 7,2024,he said.

Speaking in a press conference today March 1,2024,he stated that “Asanko workers have been subjecting our people to beating whereas some die as a result”.

On their part, some of the residents also expressed their worries on how their lives have been under threat since Asanko mine declared their intentions of working on their lands.

Speaking to OTEC news reporter, Sarkodie Samuel,they indicated if this act of the Asanko mine continues,they will be left will no other option than to encounter them in which ever way they will approach them.

“We will never preach war but peace and so calling on government to listen to our humble plea of approving the proposal of community mining in the community”,they added.
