The tussle for the capital of the yet-to-be-created Bono East Region has been taken to another level with the people and chiefs of the Nkoranza Traditional Area accusing the Minister of Regional Reorganisation and Development, Dan Botwe, and his Deputy, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah of sidelining them.

At a press conference, the chief of Buaben, Nana Owusu Dwamena Ameyaw III, said Nkoranza Traditional Council’s representatives were excluded from the meetings organised in the process of creating the region.

“On 5th February 2018, the first meeting organised by Minister of Regional Reorganisation and Development for the Commission of Inquiry to meet traditional leaders and the media in the proposed Bono East Regin was not attended by the chiefs and people of Nkoranza because the organisers did not invite them.”

He also added that “when the Justice Brobbey Commission received a petition from thirteen out of 14 paramountcies who strongly objected to the change of name from Brong to ‘Bono East’ Region, a meeting was called to discuss the issue, Nananom from Nkoranza Traditional Area were not invited, possibly because they vehemently objected the change of name from Brong to Bono.”

He stated that they have heard reports that Techiman would be named as the capital of the new region because Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah and Prof. Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi who “played leading roles in Bono East creation are also citizens of Techiman. For this reason, the chiefs and people of Nkoranza will advise themselves accordingly.”

The Bono East Region is being carved out of the Brong Ahafo Region, with many towns in that area, including Nkoranza, Techiman and Wenchi vying to be named capital.

President Nana Akufo-Addo is expected to within this week present the constitutional instruments to give legal backing to the six new regions which had massive endorsement during the referenda held in December 2018.

Already some areas within the yet-to-be-created regions are lobbying to be named as regional capitals.

Meanwhile, Dan Botwe has denied sidelining the chiefs and people of Nkoranza in the creation of the new region.
