Former Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser of the  opposition National Democratic Congress ( NDC) Brogya Genfi has alleged that Ghana’s Electoral Commission ( EC) did not postpone its planned voter registration exercise because of the occurrence coronavirus pandemic in the country.

He is certain that the postponement from the scheduled date of 18th April 2020 has nothing to do with the pandemic, but is due to the lack of voter registration equipment due to the failure of the contracted company to deliver the equipment to the EC.

The EC explained last month that it had been forced to postpone the voter registration exercise due to the coronavirus pandemic that has led to a ban on public gatherings.

“We had planned to do the registration on the 18th but because of the pandemic, we can’t do it on the 18th, so, we are observing what is happening around Ghana and the global issue…so, when it gets to a time that we think the situation is fertile for us to commence with the registration then we can do it,” Dr. Serebour Quaicoe the EC Director of Electoral Services had explained.

But the young NDC stalwart has asserted strongly that the postponements was due to the lack of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits rather than the occurrence of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The EC has not taken delivery of those BVR kits. And so whether coronavirus was there or not, the EC couldn’t have started any registration on the 18th April. But they lied to us that it was because of coronavirus,” he claimed in a video made on the 27th of April and posted on social media.

Mr Genfi challenged the EC chairperson Jean Mensa to come out with evidence to the contrary, adding that if had the BVR kits been delivered, the EC would have commenced the registration exercise with the excuse that personal protective equipment (PPEs) has been procured to protect its workers.

He added that any registration exercise done in June or beyond will be invalid in electing a President and parliamentarians, cautioning that such a move could plunge the country in chaos.
