NDC Decides: More names missing from electoral register [Video]

While the ongoing National Democratic Congress (NDC) elections to elect a flagbearer for the 2020 general elections may just be about three hours old, missing names from the electoral register is becoming a problem for the process.

The phenomenon of missing names, while may not be widespread, is becoming a problem for some constituencies, especially in the Accra Region.

Some delegates of the party who reported at the St James International School in the Tema West Constituency to vote, say they can’t find their names in the register being used for the exercise.

Adom News’ Maame Esi Nyamekye Thompson who is monitoring the elections for Adom TV and Adom FM has reported that about nine people approached the Electoral Commission officer to lodge complaints in that regard.

The affected persons, she reported, have been asked to write their names as electoral officers assess the problem to enable them to vote.

Earlier reports Adom News reporter Isabella Gidiglo from Prampram, also in the Greater Accra Region, said voting had delayed for similar reasons as the agents for two contestants, Joshua Alabi and Sylvester Mensah, have protested.

Professor Joshua Alabi and Sylvester Mensah are both constituents of the Greater Accra Region and are hoping to garner enough votes from their home region.

In spite of the challenges at Tema West Constituency where there is a delegate population of 1,414, however, voting is proceeding smoothly, Maame Esi has reported.

Some 280,000 delegates across all 275 constituencies plus three specially-created polling stations are expected to cast their ballots.

Delegates include branch executives, constituency executives, regional executives, regional council of elders, MPs, former government appointees and founding members will have their say in Ghana’s most novel internal party primary.

Seven members of the party are vying for the single slot to battle the ruling New Patriotic Party in the 2020 elections.

Those involved are former president John Mahama, Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin, former Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, former Vice Chancellor of University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi.

There are also former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr Sylvester Mensah, a cadre, Mr Goosie Tanoh and businessman, Alhaji Nurideen Iddrisu.
