Independent Presidential Candidate, Jacob Osei Yeboah, has called for the arrest of Speaker of Parliament Prof Mike Aaron Oquaye over plans of building a new 450 seater Parliamentary Chamber.

This comes after the Speaker, Mike Oquaye, indicated that Parliament has already set aside some 72 million from its budget for the project.

The 450-seater new project which has already been awarded to renowned British-Ghanaian architect, David Adjaye is expected to have libraries, a parliamentary museum, prayer areas for MPs of all religions, a canteen, interview areas, among others.

Speaking on Accra based Kingdom Fm monitored by GhanaNewsPage.com, Jacob Osei Yeboah said, “I am happy they dropped it due to public pressure and I am happy that all key actors are clear in their minds that this idea is not something that the citizens are going to buy in..” he said.

All those behind that idea must be arrested now especially the Speaker of Parliament and Parliamentary Board”, he added

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Service Board says its decision to take the development of a new chamber block out of its present agenda was occasioned by its review of representations by well-meaning Ghanaians.

“The Board, has, upon reviewing representations made to it by well-meaning Ghanaians, accordingly taken the development of the new Chamber block out of its present agenda.

“The development of the Parliamentary enclave and a new Chamber block and offices shall however, remain an essential and integral part of the future plans of the Legislature, in a bid to provide a strong, accountable, responsive and transparent parliament to serve the purpose of Parliament”, the statement signed by Kate Addo, Ag. Director Public Affairs said.
