President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has named Techiman as the capital of the newly-created Bono East Region.
Speaking at a ceremony to present Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) 113 for the creation of the Bono East Region at the Jubilee House in Accra on Wednesday, 13 February 2019, Mr Akufo-Addo said: “Techiman has been chosen as the capital of the Bono East Region.”
The chiefs and people of the Nkoranza Traditional Area had earlier accused the Deputy Minister of Regional Reorganisation and Development, Mr Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah of working for Techiman, where he hails from, to be named as the capital.
According to the chiefs, Nkoranza has a lot of advantages including its central location and close proximity to almost all towns in the new region than Techiman.
The chiefs alleged at a press conference on Monday, 11 February 2019 that the government sidelined Nkoranza from a meeting with the traditional leaders and District Chief Executives at Techiman on Thursday and, so, they perceive a well-orchestrated plan to sideline Nkoranza in the naming of a regional capital.
Despite these concerns, Nana Akufo-Addo announced Techiman as the capital of the new region.
Nana Akufo-Addo, however, assured the people that the development of Bono East Region will be spread across all the towns and villages.
President of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs said at the ceremony that: “The competition for the capital cannot and will not divide us”.
The creation of the Bono East Region, together with five others, was a campaign promise of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 elections.
After the NPP won the polls, a Commission of Inquiry, headed by a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Stephen Brobbey, was instituted to ensure the creation of the regions.
Accordingly, Oti, Bono East, Western North, Ahafo, Savannah, North East regions were created.
