A 25-year-old self-employed, Aminu Haruna has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment by the Bole District Magistrate Court for possessing fake cedi notes worth GH¢3,240.00 without authority.

ASP De-Graft Adjei, who is the prosecutor in the case, and also the police commander for Sawla District, in his statement said “on the 31/03/19, Aminu Haruna went to Murugu village at night and bought some papaw logs (a type of wood) at a cost of GH¢6,500.00 from the complainant. After paying, he quickly switched off his phone and left with the logs.
“The complainant, without knowing the money was mixed with counterfeit currency, started settling his creditors. In the process, he detected that some of the monies were counterfeit.

“He quickly called Aminu Haruna, but no avail. The complainant brought the fake money to Damongo Police Station and lodged a complaint against the accused and he was arrested.”

In the wisdom of the court,
the activities of people who engage in fake currency business are collapsing the businesses of Provision Shop owners as they sometimes use fake GH¢50.00 note to buy a tin of milk which cost GH¢3.00 and receive original notes.
The court ordered that the GH¢3,240.00 fake currencies be burnt.

His Worship, Andrew Prince Cudjo, who presided over the case, added that the sentence will serve as a lesson to those in Damongo who are swindling commercial vehicle drivers with fake currencies.
