An officer with the Ghana Prisons Service has been arrested for allegedly possessing Indian hemp, popularly known as ‘wee’.
The suspect, Corporal Emmanuel Kwabena Sackey was arrested at the Tamale Central Prisons yard on Sunday.
Cable information from the Tamale Police Command said the suspect was arrested at about 8.30pm on Sunday with nine wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp by two officers of the regional command, ASP Francis Weigam and Chief Officer Gilbert Guru.
“At about 2030HRS, the suspect was spotted with a handbag in the prisons premises and when the bag was searched, the exhibit, being nine wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp found.”
The two officers presented the suspect to the Tamale Police on Monday for further investigation.
The suspect is currently in police custody.
Some prison officers in the country have been arrested for promoting the smuggling of banned substances into prisons.
In 2018, reports said some prison officers had been dismissed for being part of an Indian hemp smuggling network who provide the substance to the prisons to inmates at a fee.
Some individuals have also been arrested for attempted to smuggle such substances to their friends and relatives in prisons custody by lacing food they bring in with the drugs.
