Awuni Akyireba, who works at the biostatistics unit at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has accused two officials of the hospital of abusing their office

The staff of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) who dragged two top officials of the institution to the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), is set to face a disciplinary probe.

The decision to refer the petitioner Awuni Akyireba for a possible action comes after the agency confirmed receipt of a petition to investigate the hospital’s CEO, Dr Oheneba Owusu-Danso and a medical director, Prof Baffour Kofi Opoku.

Akyireba, who works at the biostatistics unit at KATH accused the two officials of abusing their public office, including diverting COVID-19 donations to purchase two luxury cars.

Updating journalists on Thursday (2 December) in Kumasi, management insisted the allegations are baseless as it describes Akyireba’s conduct as bad faith.

Fred Effah Yeboah the administrator at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) said, “Currently, the board has referred him to the disciplinary committee.”

He added, “… We are yet to receive a formal notification or invitation from CHRAJ. We are aware as we have heard from the media that a staff of this hospital [KATH] has petitioned CHRAJ about some allegations…management is prepared to co-operate fully with CHRAJ to come to the conclusion of the matter because we need to infuse confidence in the management and the administration of this hospital.”

Meanwhile, the management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has denied misapplying COVID-19 special funds.

A statement signed by Kwame Frimpong, head of public affairs of KATH, said “Management, therefore, one again denies in the strongest of terms, any allegation of the misapplication of the stated COVID-19 special funds for the procurement of two cars or any other unintended purpose.”

The statement added, “Finally, management, therefore wishes to assure all stakeholders, especially its cherished collaborators and partners who made those important donations, that it has all the relevant records and evidence to validate its claims on the judicious use of the donations and is in a position and very well prepared to make these available at the appropriate time and forum as part of the process for seeking redress for the unjustified attack on its integrity.”
