Ebenezer Osei Bonsu, the father of the 3-year-old boy, who inflicted open wounds on his son was on Tuesday, 9 June 2020 sentenced to 24 months in prison by a Kumasi Circuit Court.

The court further directed Mr Bonsu to sign a mandatory bond to be of good behavior for four years.

Mr Bonsu, a 25-year-old national service personnel, was arrested after inflicting several deep open wounds on his son with a wire and belt for spoiling his phone, wetting his bed and being stubborn.

The incident happened on Sunday, 10 May 2020 at Buokrom in Kumasi.

He was arrested by the police in the Ashanti region and charged with assault and causing harm.

The toddler, who had his skin shredded up after the accused disciplined him with a wire and belt for being stubborn and destroying his ‘yam’ phone, was also admitted to and managed at a health facility in Kumasi.

The accused person pleaded guilty to the charge; an offence he denied during his first appearance in court on May 14.

Meanwhile, counsel for the accused, Mr Samuel Kodua Amofa, who had earlier apologised to the stakeholders involved in the matter for the inconvenience caused and pleaded for mercy from the Court for his client, expressed appreciation to the court for dealing leniently with his client.

“We can only be grateful because the facts were against us, so we were only praying that the Judge will have pity on us and also take into consideration the fact that we still need to cater for the child.

“So we’re grateful to the court for supposedly dealing leniently with us. We would have wanted that he be cautioned and bonded to be of good behaviour but causing harm, you know the repercussions, so if the lady Judge has dealt leniently with us like this, we’ll only be grateful to God that he answered our prayers,” he told Class News’ Maxwell Attah.

He further noted that his client is remorseful as demonstrated to the court.

“We only pray for the days to run faster for him to come out, for the world to know that he is indeed reformed.”
