Ruminant movement in the Upper East Region is prohibited for one month due to the anthrax

Following the spread of the anthrax disease in some areas of the country, the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council has imposed a one-month ban on the transportation of ruminants along the Eastern corridors of the region.

The prohibition will go into force right away on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, according to the Chief Director, Abubakari Inusah, with the intention of halting the disease’s spread.

The Bawku Municipality, Bawku West, Pusiga, Garu, Tempane, and Binduri Districts were among the places where the ban was in effect.

After consuming the carcass of an anthrax-infected cow in the area, one person was reported dead from the disease.

Dr. Emmanuel Dzotse, the regional director of health services, reported that 11 other people have subsequently been identified as potential suspects in eating the contaminated mammal’s carcass.

Dr. Dzote also guaranteed that samples from all suspects would be collected for testing and that they would receive treatment with Doxycycline and Ciprofloxacin.

Following the occurrence, the Council directed the Municipal and District Chief Executives to see that the slaughter, sale, and eating of cattle, sheep, goats, and dogs are prohibited in the districts in a news release that was released on Monday, June 5, 2023.

Additionally, they gave the Police the charge of “apprehending or arresting any person or group of persons who flout the directive.”

The Council also ordered veterinary officers to start immunizing the various types of ruminants against anthrax right away.
